Abstract

Mechanochemical synthesis offers a clean, economical, environmentally friendly, and efficient approach for synthesizing and structurally transforming porous materials. Our research focuses on developing phase-pure metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) through solid-state grinding and ball milling, alongside investigating mechanically induced structural transformations to generate materials with unique properties. We developed phase-pure MOFs, namely ZnTIA-1mc, CuTIA-1mc, and CoTIA-1mc, exclusively through mechanochemical grinding. In contrast, conventional solvothermal synthesis produced phase-impure mixtures of distinct crystalline phases. Grinding-time-dependent kinetic studies revealed metastable phase formation, while reduced crystallinity and mechanical defects contributed to enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In another study, we synthesized the zeolitic tetrazolate framework ZTF-8 through green mechanochemical ball milling. Its sodalite topology, uncoordinated nitrogen sites, and excellent acid–base stability provide opportunities for exploring electrochemical sensing and triboelectric device fabrication.

Further investigations demonstrated the potential of mechanical alloying and solid-solution formation in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. Mechanochemically engineered, defect-rich Zn/Co-ZIF-8 solid solutions exhibited enhanced electrochemical water-splitting performance and photocatalytic activity. Similarly, solid-solution formation in zeolitic imidazole–tetrazole frameworks through mechanochemical processing provided an effective strategy for improving OER activity. Collectively, these studies establish mechanochemistry as a versatile approach for controlling phase purity, structural disorder, defect engineering, and solid-solution formation in porous materials. This research highlights the potential of mechanochemical strategies for developing functional materials for energy conversion, photocatalysis, electrochemical sensing, and emerging triboelectric applications.
