Assistant Professor Faculty Position [Foreigner only] in the Organic Chemistry Division, Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo

2Field of expertiseThis appointment is in the Biomolecular Chemistry laboratory in the Organic Chemistry division. Research is in the general area of Chemical Biology, with a specialized focus on development of photoactive molecules, protein engineering, biosensing, organic synthesis, biocompatible chemistry, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cell imaging. The hired Assistant Professor will conduct research and education activities in close collaboration with Prof. Robert E. Campbell.
3Required Qualifications  A Ph.D. or an equivalent qualification, experience in delivering science education in English, and achievements in scientific research. Proficiency in English language (native speaker or equivalent level).
4Date of Commencement of EmploymentAs early as possible after a decision has been made
5Term of Employment & Renewal of ContractFive years. However, reappointment shall be limited to one time, and the term of office after reappointment shall not exceed March 31, 2033. Renewal of the contract will be determined by considering all relevant factors including, but not limited to, progress on assigned work, performance, achievements, and budgetary considerations.
6Probation Period14 days from the date of employment
7Place of WorkThe Biomolecular Chemistry laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo (7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo). In principle, the University could change the designated place of work, but no reassignment or secondment will be against one’s will. (In accordance with Article 4 of the Regulations on the Employment of University of Tokyo Faculty Members).

9Work DutiesThe successful candidate will be expected to work in collaboration with Prof. Robert E. Campbell to undertake world-class research in their area of expertise and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels (including lectures, tutorials, and mentoring). The successful candidate will also be expected to provide support for the new Global Standard Science Education Division the University of Tokyo’s ongoing efforts to further internationalize its student body and curriculum. In principle, the University could change or reassign work duties, but not against one’s will. (In accordance with Article 4 of the Regulations on the Employment of University of Tokyo Faculty Members).
10Working HoursBased on the discretionary work system for professional work, working hours are deemed to be 7 hours and 45 minutes per day, Monday to Friday.
11Days offSaturdays, Sundays, national holidays and end-of-year holidays (December 29 to January 3)
12Paid LeavePaid leave is available for a variety of reasons (e.g., annual leave, sick leave, special leave, etc.) as described in The University of Tokyo Rules on Working Hours and Leave for Academic and Administrative Staff
13Wages, etc.An annual-based salary system. Salary will be decided after taking into account the successful candidate’s academic and professional background, etc.
14AllowancesCommuting allowance and other allowances decided by the University of Tokyo
15InsuranceThe successful candidate will be automatically enrolled in the insurance scheme provided by the Mutual Aid Association of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and employment insurance. This includes health insurance and pension.
